Up for auction is an Original Model 1840 Heavy Cavalry Saber that came from a family in Tennessee. it is an import saber that is marked S & K on the drag of the scabbard. S & K stands for the firm name of Snitzler and Kirshbaum who imported swords to this country during the civil war. The sword's scabbard ring mounts are tapered and the sword has an 1850 type sword tip instead of the 1840 type. This is the way it was made. This sword has never been apart guaranteed. The sword blade is over 36 inches long with the entire sword being over 42 inches long. There are no markings on the blade, There are a few minor nicks on the blade edge but it has not been sharpened. The scabbard is 37 1/2 inches long and has a couple of door dings near in the lower part. The brass guard is in great condition with only just a very minor crack where the top of the handguard has been bent down which is quite common on these pieces. The only thing missing on the piece is the grip wrap and wire. This grip is the import type with the cord under the leather which is also lacking. Very interesting story regarding this sword and it's origins: This sword was one of two swords picked up at a Louisville show from a WW2 vet. The other sword was a Japanese WW2 sword. This vet had no use for the 1840 Cav sword and my friend had to buy both to get the Japanese sword read more
