Up for auction is an original Dale Nichols print titled End of The Hunt . The image measures by sight 10 and 1/2 inches high by 13 inches wide. It is matted and framed under glass to a size of 17 and 1/2 inches high by 19 and 1/2 inches wide. I have not examined the print out of the frame but it appears that the print is in excellent condition and the wooden frame which appears to be original has some scattered nicks in the wood photos( # 6,7,8 and 9) but otherwise is in excellent vintage condition for its age. I noticed a few specks of lint on the mat under the glass in the bottom left corner. The back of the picture has brown paper, some old scotch tape reinforcing the brown paper backing and the original framer's information photos #10 and # 11. I did some research on the internet and found a reference to this picture framer in an April 1938 Brooklyn newspaper. Also, the phone number begins with the word TRIangle and my research revealed that this was used by AT&T in Brooklyn Heights from the 1930's- 1950's. I am unable to date the print and this is the only information I have to assign a wide range date to the print. I know that Dale Nichols painted the original oil painting "End of The Hunt" in 1934 and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC bought it in 1941. Other than that I have no other information. I am certain that there are Nichols collectors that will recognize this print and be able to date it. Recent Dave Nichols auction sales for his paintings are realizing anywhere from $30,000 and up and his prints can be found on the internet from $750 and up. I have owned this print for 20 years. I purchased this at an estate sale in Sarasota Florida of a retired Chrysler Auto Industry executive. I also purchased an original large oil painting by Lowell Nesbitt dated 1964 from the same estate. This print has hung in a pet free, smoke free, temperature controlled environment and out of direct sunlight for 20 years. Please email me with any questions. Admired for his gentle attention to detail and loving portrayals of rural life, Nichols' work was selected for exhibition at the Century of Progress in Chicago as well as five World's Fairs. His work can be found in numerous public and private collections throughout the country as well as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.Dale William Nichols was a Rural Regionalist painter who focused his art on the subject of farm life. He found his inspiration in his experiences as a youth growing up on a farm in America. In the 1930s, the search for a pure form of American art was growing, and the amount of public interest in the American art world grew tremendously. This was when Nichols entered the art world, at the boom of the American Scene movement. The American Scene movement consisted of Regionalist artists as well as Rural Regionalist artists.
