ORIGINAL E.A. "FROG" SMITH OIL ON PANEL IN FRAME HER Raconteur and Folk Historian Description Original Ernest Archer (E. A.) "Frog" Smith in frame. Depicts a country scene with a fairy passing local people. Signed lower right. History: E. A. Smith, Sr. (Ft. Myers) actively worked in every part of Florida. Born in 1896, Smith worked as a yard sweeper, blacksmith, machinist, oiler, steam locomotive operator, lumberman,harmonica player, alligator hunter, and frog-gigger. The last occupation earned him his nickname of "Frog."Smith was a talented self-taught painter who depicted scenes from Florida’s past that lived in his memory. He was also an excellent storyteller and folk historian. Smith demonstrated at the Smithsonian Institution’s Festival of American Folklife and the Florida Folk Festival.
