Warthog Trotting by Monday Thabethe DescriptionMonday Thabethe portrayed an African Warthog trotting in the African bush. The tail is typically held up; the idea of motion is reinforced by the bent right front knee. The artist signed his name on the underside of the stomach "Monday". The tip of the tail is fixed on to the back of the animal. The skin texture is rendered by etching fine lines in the wood after completing the animal. This tactility conveys the roughness and stiffness of the animal hair. The underside of the feet is also detailed.Note Monday's interpretations of the long straight hair along the spine of the warthog and the hair on both sides of the lower jaw.The tusks are made out of cow bone and they are fixed into the head with epoxy glue. The very dark brown colour is uniform on the entire statue. This warthog is larger and darker than the other listed standing warthog: it is 11 oz. heavier (300 g).Leadwood is a hardwood species indigenous to Southern Africa. It is so hard that, before the advent of metal, Africans used it as a blade for their agricultural implements. Our suppliers bring to the studio dead branches and logs which they harvest in the rural areas in the province of Mpumalanga in South Africa. The timber originates from trees that have died of natural causes (e.g. pushed over by elephants, struck by lightning) read more
