This is an auction for an original US "smooth side" M1858 Canteen, as used during the Civil War. It is in good, solid condition, with no holes or rust-throughs-it will hold water with no problem. It's dented, as you can see, but this is pretty typical with these canteens It was painted with gold paint-I suspect this was a GAR thing-I have another canteen that has also been painted gold. As a reenactor, I would buy these original canteens here on ebay, and "restore" them for my own use. I would melt some beeswax and pour it into the canteen, swish it around, and let it cool. This would seal up any rust inside, and give the water a pleasant smell and taste. Then I would sew on an authentic cover and strap. Why buy a repop canteen when it is so much cooler to carry one which was actually "there"? You think of the soldiers of '61-'65 every time you take a drink.
