Author/Artist Mark Catesby: The Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands. Date of Publication Third edition, first published 1771. Type of Print Original hand colored engraving. Size of Image 21" X 14 1/4" (sheet size: plate marks at 13 3/4" X 10 1/4") Condition In overall very good to excellent condition. Please note there is a slight mat burn around the periphery of the plate, well outside the plate mark, the result if this image having lived most of its life inside a frame and inside a mat. There are also two brown stains at the lower portion of the plate, again, well below the plate mark. Description Although he was born and trained in England, Mark Catesby [1683-1749] was undoubtedly the major figure in American ornithology in the 18th century. Catesby's The Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands first published between 1731-43, is credited with being the only attempt of the period to cover the entire natural history of a North American colony. A fascinating, rather whimsical, interpretation of flowers, birds and animals - perhaps even a slight smirk can be seen on some of his subjects.
