This auction is for an original enlisted U.S. Navy submariner’s silver bullion “dolphins” qualification mark. While bullion was not authorized by USN uniform regulations, a large segment of the officer and enlisted population purchased and wore bullion “dolphins.” This is a uniform removal item.The U.S. Navy authorized a submariner’s qualification distinguishing mark in 1924. The mark, or for officers, a device, was a gold colored pair of dolphins flanking the bow and diving planes of a submarine. The qualifying mark for enlisted personnel was the same design embroidered in white for wear on the blue uniform and in navy blue for wear on the white uniform.Officers wore the “dolphins” pin over the left breast pocket and, initially, qualified enlisted personnel wore the appropriate colored “dolphins” patch on the outside of the right sleeve and placed between the wrist and the elbow.In 1947, the placement of the enlisted personnel’s qualification mark was moved to above the left breast pocket.In 1950, officers were authorized to wear either the gold dolphins pin or gold embroidered dolphins in a background color to match the uniform being worn.
