This listing is for an original red recipe box that was produced in 1938 as a promotion for a novel entitled TOO MANY COOKS, by Rex Stout. This was the fifth novel authored by Stout which used the fictional Nero Wolfe character. The story was serialized in 1938 by The American Magazine just before its publication in book form. To coincide with the serialization, the magazine publisher sent the author on a nationwide promotional tour which included stops at a dozen U.S. cities. At the time, the tour was considered the most famous promotional show in publishing history. As a keepsake for guests, the magazine created a small red box in the shape of a book which contained a "Living Issue Luncheon Menu", greeting statement from Nero Wolfe, and a card for each of the recipes that appear in the novel. This was a limited edition of 1,000 copies. The recipe box has been described by Stout's biographer as one of the most sought-after items of Stout memorabilia. When accompanied by the cover jacket, it has been priced as high as $3,750 by premium book dealers. Without the cover jacket, the value is less certain. The recipe box in this listing includes all 34 recipe cards, Nero Wolfe greeting card, and the luncheon menu card. All cards are in Good condition, as shown in the pics. Please note that the original dust jacket IS NOT included.
