The work is offered here as attributed to Carter inasmuch as there is no provenance; probably dates to circa 1930s.Clarence H. Carter (1904-2000), very well-listed American artist was noted for his unusual works with unexpected subjects, of which the present painting is an excellent example. It depicts a farmyard, most likely near his native Portsmouth, southern Ohio, in which a lone flowering plant -- a volunteer -- has grown. It is shown in bright colorful detail, contrasting to the relatively somewhat somber farm buildings, and thereby draws our immediate attention. The bright flower thus becomes the subject of the painting -- could be titled "Tenacity of Life", or "Beauty Is Where You Find It".A remarkable work of art indeed!CONDITION -- Clean and vivid. NO folds or creases, mat burns, or foxing. No discernible fading, if any at all. About one inch above the bottom, on the right side, there is a tiny tear and nick at the extreme edge, about 1/4 to 3/8 inches (see photos), which will of course be covered when the picture is matted and framed.
