Up for bid is an unframed original watercolor painting measuring 10.75" by 15" by Massachusetts artist John A. Cook (1870-1936). The painting is not dated so I am guessing it was painted after 1900, but, again, the exact date is unknown. John A. Cook was best known for his watercolors and harbor/nautical scenes. If you search the internet, you'll be able to find auction prices for his work and more information about him. The condition of this painting is very good. The colors are nice and don't appear to have faded much if at all. He has captured the golden light at sunrise or sunset very well. At one time, the painting had been framed--if you look very closely, you can see a 1/8th inch marking around the edge of the paper indicating it was matted and framed. I see no evidence of foxing except for that 1/8th inch edge around the perimeter. There is a pinprick hole in each of the corners where the artist placed tacks to hold it to a surface while he painted. I purchased it 15-20 years ago with the intention of framing, but have never done so. It has been stored in an acid-free portfolio ever since I've had it.
