This interesting item is an original letter sent from the Officer i/c Territorial Force Records to Mrs. Green of Bolton. Has the details filled in by hand and states that notification has been received to the effect that the late Pt. Green of the 1/5th Bn. Loyal Lancs., service number 3897, was buried at Billacourt cemetery, situated 5 1/2 miles S.W. of Arras. Copy signature at the bottom and dated 31.6.16 (strange as there are only 30 days in June!) and date stamped 1 Jul 1916 at the bottom. Paper has been folded many times leaving creases along and down with small tears on the folds and a slightly larger tear on the top fold. Also has some marks but overall a nice item of original WW1 memorabilia. ALSO comes with a small Common Prayer Book which has 'Presented to Ernest Green on his 17th birthday Oct. 1st 1912 by his mother'. Has some marks on the covers, creases on the first page and corner creases on a few pages. Marks and slight 'pulling' at the spine between two pages in a few places on some pages but overall a nice addition to the letter, belonging to the same man. Research on the Commonwealth War Grave Commission website shows that he is indeed buried at Billacourt Cemetary but his service number is 3879 (not 3897 as shown on the notification) and his date of death was 26th May 1916.
