Up for auction is the July 6, 1895, issue of the early entertainment-related newspaper, "New York Clipper." Touted as "The Oldest American Sporting and Theatrical Journal" and founded by Frank Queen in 1853, this rare paper includes news about nearly every aspect of late 19th century entertainment -- the circus, theater, variety and minstrelsy, bicycling, horse racing, boxing, chess, baseball, casinos, aquatics and athletics, and more. T are help wanted ads for entertainers, profiles, scores, detailed listings of w each circus is set up and what play is showing in which theater, mentions of historic names (such as boxer Jack Dempsey), and, much, much more. The front cover features a portrait of an actress named Charlotte Ray, a 4th of July poem, and fiction. The back cover features a full-page ad for Ringling Bros. (with a nice portrait of the five brothers), with quotes from newspapers and the claim that "The people of East and West have spoken. T is no question of rivalry, for rivalry is paralyzed. Its ranting, jealous and underhanded attacks only emphasize the unquestioned supremacy of the WORLD'S GREATEST SHOWS." The tabloid-style newspaper, which measures approximately 13" by 18" and has 16 pages, is in extremely nice condition.
