FABULOUS CIVIL WAR $5 You are viewing Confederate Note Type 16 in Choice Crisp Uncirculated condition, but you won't really view it until you hold it in your hand - it's way too nice to be appreciated in a scan. Issued right after the Civil War broke out, on September 2nd, 1861, this note displays the finest engraving of Keatinge and Ball in RIchmond. The Counters (panels displaying the denomination), the vignettes (steel-engraved illustrations), and the shaded lettering complemented by countless undulating flourishes hold their own against any pre-war Obsolete Currency design. The quality of the printing impression is the finest we've seen. The dapper bowtie-wearing Christopher Memminger (CSA Secretary of Treasury) looks so realistic it seems that he could start talking, and every fold in Minerva's toga at the upper right appears to be in 3-D. When you add the fact that the bill is completely UNCIRCULATED without a single fold, you know that you are looking at a true winner. Additional facts that should interest the Confederate history buff: This is the rare Z plate! The bill was backed by Confederate bonds paying 8% interest, and was payable six months after the ratification of a treaty of Peace between the Confederate States and the United States. The bill is printed on "CSA" watermarked paper! The bill has 2 so-called "hammer" read more
