The Arguments of the Books and Chapters of the Old and New Testaments With Practical Observations. Written originally in French By the Reverend Mr. Ostervald, Professor of Divinity, and one of the Ministers of the Church at Neufchatel in Swisserland: And by him presented to the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge. Translated by John Chamberlayne, Esq. vols 1 & 3, London, 1737; vol 2 London 1749 This foundational work by the translator of the French "Ostervald Bible" as described in the following from Wikepedia: "His innovative proposals embraced dogmatics, exegesis (his important translation of and commentary on the Bible ) His writings had a great influence, bearing spiritualrenewal among Waldensian , Dutch , German , Hungarian and Scandinavian Protestants. Moreover, the English Royal Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts – of which he was a member – brought his teachings to the countries of the Middle East , India , Canada and the West-Indian Islands. His highly influential oeuvre was later called "the second Reformation". The front board of vol 1 is detached and the front board of vol 2 is loose but still attached. Otherwise the bindings are strong. A nice and unusual set.
