This is a limited edition hardcover book, illustrated and signed by Saul Field. It is number 1455 of 2000. For me, discovering the Limited Editions Club was a revelation. Years ago, I subscribed to the Heritage Club . I loved the books I got. I loved the illustrations. I later learned these same editions were being published by the Easton Press in their various series. So when I came across the originals, hand-signed by the illustrators , I was elated. How cool is that?! Plus each and every book is painstakingly produced.The books are made from the finest materials as per the vision of the publisher,George Macy. The binding is stitched, not glued. The paper is usually custom made, mixing rag and paper together so they don't fade over time. Even the illustrations are usually hand-colored or printed at an art print level for each volume!! If you compare these volumes to the Heritage or Easton Press editions, you can see the colors are much brighter and in greater variety.These are outrageously beautiful books! So I collected quite a few of them. Some I bought from used bookstores, some from private owners. Not all of the slipcases have held up as well as the books.Also, I devised a way to cut a Brodart plastic cover so it would fold around the book, similar to the glassine covers that came originally with the books. The plastic is not as stiff as the glassine but protects the book well enough. Over the years, I have decided the best way to display these books is with the slipcase back facing out. They have all been constructed so that the title is on the back. This way the books themselves have little or no exposure to sunlight, with or without glassine or plastic covers. I also happen to have the Monthly Letter for this volume. If you have never read one, they are amazing. They talk in detail about the history of the author, the book and the illustrator, and go into great detail about the construction of the book. The slipcase has a slight bump at a bottom corner, other corners show some wear, and there is some sun-fading throughout (see last photo). I am not a book dealer, but as an amateur, I would say the slipcase is in Very Good to Near Fine condition and the book is in Fine condition. The book does not have a glassine cover but instead has a customized Brodart cover on it.
