The 1896 $5 Silver Certificate, is widely considered one of the most beautiful designs ever used on American paper money, but became the subject of a great deal of controversy. In the center of this magnificent note is an allegorical female representing electricity as the most dominant force in the world and the background shows the U.S. Capitol. While classical female figures appeared on hundreds of different bank notes throughout the 19th century, this particular note elicited a violent, negative reaction at the time, from senators' wives, and the entire series was quickly abandoned.
