The 1914 series of Federal Reserve Notes were the first currency issues of the then new Federal Reserve System, instead of the United States Treasury, which makes these bills significant in U.S. history. To bring confidence to the new system, the Federal Reserve Act required an obligation clause to the new notes stating that they were "Redeemable in gold on demand at the Treasury Department of the United States in the city of Washington, District of Columbia or in gold or lawful money at any Federal Reserve Bank." Often referred to as the "Mermaid Note", the first $50 Federal Reserve Note was issued with a portrait of President Ulysses S. Grant on the obverse and an allegorical figure of Panama between a merchant ship and a Battleship on the reverse. It was meant to commemorate the finishing of the Panama Canal as a major American accomplishment, with the merchant ship crossing from the Pacific Ocean and Battleship from the Atlantic Ocean.
