Having one of the best samplermaker names I have ever seen on a schoolgirl's sampler,"SAFIRE THRUSELL",the inscription also includes with her signature a most endearing presentation poem that begins with the words:"TO YOU MY DEAR MOTHER....".....not only presenting the sampler to her mother,but also promising her mother future works of industry that would make her proud! The entire inscription is stitched in a not very geometric vining cartouche,and done with a kind of primitive naivete in the lettering and word placement (including use of a symbol for the word and,as well as misspelling and squeezing of "Years" 2 lines above) that gives it an overall folky charm;" TO YOU,MY DEAR MOTHER,THIS WORK I PRESENT,AND HOPE IT WILL PLEASE YOU, AND GIVE YOU CONTENT,THEN I'LL THROUGH MY LIFE,USE MY UTMOST ENDEAVORS,TO PLEASE YOU & MERIT YOU,FUTURE KIND FAVORS...SAFIRE THRUSELL AGED 11 YEARS JULY 23,(1821?)". Safire decided to follow the common tradition of so many samplermakers,and turn her charming sampler into a "vanity sampler" by later intentionally removing the date to disguise her true age relative to possible suitors.
