Georges-Louis Leclerc Comte de Buffon was a scientist that published 38 volumes classifying and observing animal species. Vollard, Picsasso's publisher, convinced him to create illustrations for a new book illustrating Buffon's volumes. However he died before it was finished so Roger Lacouriere took over the project and he was the one who showed Picasso that adding aquatint to the sugar and etching plate allowed for different grey hues. It also preserved Picasso's brushwork and board area color rather than just thin lines.
