Amtrak Superliner Sleeping CarBRASSMade in Korea by Samhongsa.Imported by Pacific Fast Mail.HO Scale. Used but In original box with original foam. Includes window sheet and two sheets of decals as well as instructions on where decals are placed and notes on history, painting and finishing from Pacific Fast Mail. I have the complete Pacific Fast Mail Amtrak Superliner consist including all cars and engines. So check back every week to see which new brass pieces are up for no-reserve auction!---Excerpt from paperwork:When Amtrak was first formed in 1971, its fleet consisted of second-hand equipment purchased from those railroads still operating passenger trains. This fleet was twenty to thirty years old on the average, and badly in need of replacement. Amtrak struggled through its early years with this fleet, suffering countless mainenance problems associated with ill-matched and outworn equipment. Envisioned for the future, though, were entirely new trains, electrically heated and cooled from locomotive-supplied power. These cars would serve the major Western transcontinental routes. The Pullman-Standard Division of Pullman Incorporated, with a century old tradition of passenger car building, was awarded the contract for the new trains, which were named SUPERLINER. The designs were inspired by the Budd-built 'High-Level' trains of the Santa-Fe, however they share few dimensions, being built instead to some of the basic dimensions of Pullman-Standard's bi-level commute equipment.The first cars delivered were the Coaches, which went into trial service in Spring of 1979 in the Great Lakes and Pacific Northwest short-haul corridors. As complete trains became available (delayed by strikes at the builder) they were pressed into immediate service, with the EMPIRE BUILDER being the first train to have its troublesome steam-heated equipment replaced by the silent, modern all-electric SUPERLINERS. Soon to follow were the SAN FRANCISCO ZEPHYR, the SOUTHWEST LIMITED, the COAST STARLIGHT, and the SUNSET LIMITED. Shortly thereafter, SUPERLINER equipment was assigned to such trains as the PIONEER and the DESERT WIND.By 1981, Pullman-Standard had completed 284 SUPERLINER cars for Amtrak, bringing them a level of comfort and reliability previously unrealized in Amtrak service. The last car to be delivered was also the last passenger car to be built by Pullman, which closed its passenger car-building operation upon the delivery of Sleeping Car 32009. This car was ceremoniously named 'George M. Pullman' in honor of the father of the railway sleeping car and founder of the Pullman Company.Pacific Fast Mail's SUPERLINER cars have been developed from extensive field research and detailed photographic study. They represent the later variation of SUPERLINER carbody, which has eight roof ribs.---From Wikipedia: The Superliner is a double-decker passenger car used by Amtrak on long-haul trains that do not use the Northeast Corridor . The initial cars were built by Pullman-Standard in the late 1970s and a second order was built in the mid 1990s by Pullman's successor, Bombardier Transportation . As delivered, the cars came in various configurations, including coach , diner , and sleeper . State-funded routes in California use another variant of the Superliner passenger car. Cars of this variant are dubbed "California Cars" or "Surfliners", and the only difference between these and regular Superliners is that Surfliners and California Cars have two sets of doors on each side of the car. The normal Superliner has one door on each side. Superliner consist at Kalamath Falls, Oregon. When funding became available for Amtrak to acquire new cars, plans were made to acquire bi-level cars based on the 1956 Budd-built El Capitan Hi-Levels operated by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway (which were purchased by Amtrak upon formation in 1971).
