Pair antique Sevres Napoleonic cabinet plates c. 1804 Up for auction is this magnificent pair of antique Napoleonic Sevres porcelain cabinet plates made in 1804.Done in cobalt blue or bleu de roi they are surrounded by the Napoleonic coat of arms and graceful swan symbol of Josephine. They have two outstanding center portraits , the first is of Chateau de Neuilly found at Neuilly sur Seine, France. This " Grand masion" was built in 1751 and was purchased in 1804 ( same year the plates were made) by Joachim, Napoleon,Murat brother in law to Napoleon 1st thru marriage to his sister Caroline Boneaparte. Murat was side by side with Napoleon during the uprising and through the French Revolution. Many lavish affaires were held t including one for Napoleon himself on the occasion of his coronation as king of Italy in 1805. Murat soon after became king of Naples and all his goods reverted to being Imperial crown lands at which time the property was donated to Princess Pauline Borghese, Napoleon's sister. The second is Chateau d' Azay le Rideau, built from 1515 to 1527, one of the earliest and most beautiful of the French Renaissance chateau. Built on an island in the Indre River, it's foundation rises straight out of the water for a very dramatic effect. The chateau has a long and interesting history.
