Pair of Antique Spode Imari Sauce Tureens w Liners Frog Pattern #3248 c 1822 Offered for sale is this very fine pair of Spode Sauce Tureens with Under-plates from the early 19th century. They sauce tureens are very finely painted in a Japanese-inspired Imari pattern, called the Frog Pattern, #3248, introduced around 1820. The pattern is a combination of transfer printed cobalt blue, with intricate iron-red enamel, and heaving gilding overall. Spode advertized this pattern as having been used at the coronation of King George IV in 1821. It is one of the handsomest and most distinctive of the "Japan" patterns that were so popular in Regency England. The tureens are marked with the square printed Spode Mark or the impressed "Spode New Stone" mark. This combination of marks dates the set to around 1822.Each tureen stands 6 inches tall by 6 1/2 inches wide across the handles. The under-plates measure 8 1/4 inches wide. The pair weighs 5 lbs 2 oz all together (shipping weight 9 lbs).Condition: The pair is in excellent condition, save for one chip on the foot of a tureen, as shown, and some glaze cracks on one of the under-plates, also as shown, but it's too faint to see even in the closeup.
