Pair of bone dishes (known as crescent dishes in Europe) with a romantic history. (See Notes). By Friedrich Christian Greiner & Soehne. From Rauenstein (Thuringia) Germany. Produced around 1895. Classic floral and fruity Blue Onion pattern. With scalloped edge. Extremely pretty. Historical Notes 1. One of many pieces brought from Germany to the United States by a couple married in Berlin in the 1920s. The bride was from Mainz, Germany, and many pieces in this pattern were part of her substantial trousseau. The couple relocated to New Orleans in the late 1930s. 2. Bone dishes were placed above each plate in a place setting, thus the curved shape, for the convenience of each diner. (That is just so gracious, and civilized !) Blue Underglaze Backstamp Marked on back with backstamp showing two crossed elements over a handwritten R-n . Dr. Rudi Greiner-Adam identifies this form as being used "around 1895" as it was then replaced by the R=n mark in December of 1895. Also impressed on bottom, near to rim with the number 1212 , both dishes. (CLOSE-UP PHOTOS on request.) Measurements About 6 1/2 " x 3 1/2 " x 1" deep. Condition Excellent. No chips, cracks, crazing or repairs. See and watch for more listings for pieces in the Blue Onion pattern from this collection. Please refer to my feedback for reliability.
