Up for auction is a FABULOUS pair of CHINESE EXPORT PORCELAIN FRENCH IMPALING SUTTON ARMORIAL PLATES, c. 1765 This pair was purchased at Pook & Pook 's September 2006 sale. The spearhead border and floral sprays along the rim are the perfect balance to the brilliant f amily crests in the center. Th e two are in very good condition , the gilt around the border and the center arms are slightly worn but still in brilliant condition for their age. Th ere are a few minor chi ps, frits and firing flaws that I've t ried to capture in the photo s. Other pieces in our collection have cracks and frits and staple repairs , so judgment on condition can vary with each individual, however, I believe these are in very good conditio n; of course, please ask for more details regarding any of the pictures if you have any. As mentioned in David S. H oward's Ch inese Armorial Porcelain: Volume II , "The arms ar e of more than one branch of the family of French, Ermine a chevron sable; with crest , A dolphin naiant proper, and motto 'Malo mori quam foedari'. The impaled coat is almost certainly of Sutton of Wexford, or a lion rampant gules double-queued standing on a lizard vert ." ( p. 3 71) If you have any questions, please ask us before bidding.
