For those woodworkers who like the hand-shaped look, the smaller curves on trim can be a difficult proposition — or at the least a time-intensive one. Enter these two mini-sized spokeshaves featuring brass wings on each of the two types of blades: 13/16" straight edge cutter (marked with letters LE) and a narrow 5/16 cutter blade between two 45 degree shoulders. The blades are made up of steel and are secured by a screw with adjustment up and down the blade slot. The one with a 13/16" blade is 4" from wing handle tip to tip. It has a 5/8" by 3/4" sole. The other with 45 degree shoulders is 3 1/2" from wing handle tip to tip. It has a 3/8" by 5/8" sole between the shoulders. Neither spokeshave has foundry marks or trademarks to identify their source or maker. I bought these two brass spokeshaves from the estate of a violin maker, however it was obvious that he had not used them. I tuned them up sufficiently for my use by flattening the soles, trimming the mouths and sharpening the cutter irons. Both could use some more tuning and honing for efficient shaving. These miniature spokeshaves are used two handed with your thumb behind each wing handle. Just position the tool where you need to shave, place a thumb on either wing, and push. Whether chamfering or rounding the blades shave a very narrow ribbon of wood with each pass of the plane. read more
