PAIR OF STAFFORDSHIRERUSSET & WHITE EARTHENWARE POT DOGS / WALLY DOGS SPANIEL FIGURES WITH COLLARS & LOCKS CIRCA: 1865 (1855 to 1875) Size: Approx 9.5 inches tall (Approximate Measurement). LOW START & NO RESERVE Good Luck Everyone... This is a pair of Staffordshire earthenware seated Spaniel figures, sometimes known as Comforters, Pot Dogs or Wally Dogs. The figures are decorated in russet on white, with the facial features painted in black to the muzzle, eyelids, eyebrows and pupils. They each have a collar and lock to their neck, coloured in gold. Both dogs have their tails curled around the back leg at ground level to the front of the dog. These dogs have closed bases, although one has a firing fault (see below). THEY DISPLAY WONDERFULLY! Manufacture: Staffordshire, unmarked - factory unknown. I don’t personally know much about these, only that they were given to my Great Grandmother by the family she worked for. A friend who is quite knowledgeable about this sort of stuff tells me they are probably from Staffordshire in manufacture. Evidently various Staffordshire types of figure were produced from a number of centres of manufacture in England and in Scotland, but production of such figures in Staffordshire was by far the most abundant.
