This is a collection of patents for a Vapo-Cresolene Lamp, dated Sept. 27, 1881, and Aug 4, 1885. Printed on Card Stock, or sent on CD. Let us know your choice at time of payment. At any given time, t are about a dozen of these lamps on eBay, in various states of completeness or disrepair. Knowledge in such matters is of value both in making decisions, and in increasing the "joy of the hunt". is a wealth of information from the ultimate source -- the inventor himself, via the United States Patent Office. We have owned several models of vapo-lamps by the same company, some with their boxes. Only some models have the patent date stamped on the side of the vessel. These documents could not be traced from any of the others. However, all variations are quite similar, and the patents apply to each. The date seen most often is August 4, 1885. The inventor was James H. Valentine of Stanley, New Jersey. However, he states in the text that this is an improvement on a previous patent granted to himself and to one George Shepard Page on September 27, 1881. This date is not marked on any of the models we have seen. You must have both. Mr. Valentine explains that the 2nd patent is an improvement on his previous, and that most parts are the same as patented earlier. The 1881 go-around gives a quaint account of the medical knowledge of the day. The substance "volatized" is identified as "cresylic acid". The directions for use, and beneficial effects to the patient, are poetically explained in a long paragraph. ... "Waking or sleeping, and pursuing any ordinary habit, will inhale the air thus impregnated with the volatized substance, thus reaching these destructive germs and removing the causes of disease, and the spread of contagion and infected localities will become disinfected." He goes on to describe his use of lavender oil (5 drops), or citronella to disguise the odor of the cresolene. Mr. Shepard's improvements in the second patent are for the vaporizing chamber. It makes it more efficient, holds the temperature steady, and reduces smoking. Total of 7 pages, 3 of drawings and 4 of text. A few words from the inventors... Be it known that I, Elias H. Carptenter, of the city and county of Providence, and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Method of and Apparatus for Volatizing Cresylic Acid... The design of my invention is to cure and mitigate certain diseases which have long resisted the efforts of the medical profession to cure or considerably alleviate; also, to prevent the spread of contagious diseases, and to be used generally for the purposes of disinfection. Be it known that I, Hames H. Valentine, a citizen of the United States, residing in Stanley, in the county of Morris and State of New Jersey, have invented certain Improvements in Vaporizers... This invention relates to vaporizers or censers used chiefly for vaporizing or evaporating medical substances, although applicable also for vaporizing perfumes or incense... My invention aims to effect the more thorough and uniform distribution of heat to the basin, and to its entire undersurface, thus expediting the vaporization, and also to avoid the effects of the smoking of the lamp.... read more
