Offered for sale is a framed pencil sketch. Appears to be a 1950s frame.Study depicts a French Revolution street barricade. The barricade is to the left in the picture. Arising from the barricade is a flag, with the words La Liberte Le Mort. There are words(or notes) written in the top center on the center building, but can not understand the French words) Behind the barrels that make up the barricade, you can see figures in the background holding up sticks. There are soldiers in the foreground, one with a rifle, and two attending a canon (which I think has not really been drawn in yet)Signed lower left. Appears to be Raffort. There is an Etienne Raffort, that was a French artist that lived 1802-1895. I am assuming that this was a sketch done by the artist before he painted the real Barricade painting. Purchased this piece at an estate sale and the auction company took no notice. I could tell it looked good upon closer inspection. Not sure about the quality of the paper, which would help date the piece. The paper is a tannish color, not white at all. The paper is not smooth. It is bumpy and raised, with lots of divets in it, which can be seen under a loupe. This is being sold as is.This piece was obviously well respected, since it was framed in such a nice frame with a colored matte.Image visible: 10 1/2" x 9". Matte is 1 1/2" wide read more
