A HANDSOME PORTRAIT SIGNED BY PERCY GRAINGER An extremely attractive portrait signed by Percy Grainger, the Australian-born composer, arranger and pianist. In the course of a long and innovative career he played a prominent role in the revival of interest in British folk music in the early years of the 20th century. He also made many adaptations of other composers' works. Although much of his work was experimental and unusual, the piece with which he is most generally associated is his piano arrangement of the folk-dance tune "Country Gardens." He also provided Delius with the orchestral setting for "Brigg Fair" and remained friends with the composer the rest of his life. A great admirer and interpreter of Grieg, the admiration was returned. Grieg was in awe of Grainger's work. The photo is inscribed to Mortimer Browning, a student of Grainger's. Browning would go on to a career as a composer (Concerto for Theremin, etc.), organist, pianist, lecturer and recording artist. The photo is 8 x 10 inches, matted and framed to overall dimensions of 14.5 x 17.5 inches. The photo is in very good condition with warm, rich sepia tones. A small spot at the the bottom (visible in detail photo below "Percy") that was touched-up. Photographer's embossed stamp (Sol Young) in lower corner.
