Wearing a broad-brimmed hat and brocadecape, Saint Gabriel the archangel holds a matchlock gun. He is dressed in the style of a Spanish grandee and represents a soldier in the army of God. Titled "Arcángel Gabriel soldado" in Spanish. With exquisite brushstrokes, applying purpurine, the artist demonstrates the superb pictorial religious themes generated from the Cuzco School, based on the famous colonial paintings found in the convents of Cuzco in the 16th century. This painting has been done in the style of the works of La Escuela Cusqueña (The Cuzco School,) the history of which is traced to the 17th century. Originally influenced by Spanish and Italian artists, this school was commissioned to paint sacred art in churches and monasteries throughout the Peruvian city of Cusco (Cuzco) after the area was devastated by an earthquake in 1650. The collected efforts of numerous artists gradually evolved into a unique yet harmonious and consistent style, devoid of individualism. This painting is not stretched or framed.
