Peters and Reed ZaneWare Art Pottery HangingPlanter This hanging planter from the Zane Pottery Co. (in South Zanesville Ohio) is in the Moss Aztec style (brown with green highlights) and is an example of the ‘art’s and crafts’ style. It does not have the chains to hang it but I have never seen any examples with chains. As typical of these pieces, only the interior has a glazed finish to keep the water from seeping through. This planter is 2” tall and 5” at its widest point and the rim is 3.5” across and it is in perfect condition with not flaws, chips, or cracks. I see this same pattern on the web from $50.00 to nearly $150.00 but I will begin this auction very low. If you have any questions or corrections for me please let me know! Peters and Reed Pottery Peters and Reed Pottery was established by John D. Peters and Adam Reed in 1899 using the local red clay to produce a variety of wares. Their first recognized art pottery line was Moss Aztec and was introduced in 1912. The pattern has an unglazed exterior with designs molded in high relief and the recesses highlighted with a green wash. Only the interior is glazed to hold water. Moss Aztec was developed by Frank Ferrell who later became famous at Roseville Pottery. Other recognized Peter and Reed art pottery lines include Chromal, Landsun, Montene, and Pereco.In 1921, Peters and Reed changed its name to The Zane Pottery Company after Peters and Reed retired, and Harry McClelland became president. Many of the art pottery lines produced by Peters and Reed Pottery were continued by Zane Pottery. Zane Pottery continued in existence until 1941 at which time the company was sold to Gonder Pottery.
