Not sure if this is what I was told, but was told it was an antique foot warmer. You put warm ashes in it and place it under the covers at the bottom of the bed! I think an electric blanket would be better!!! Still a great collectable and a beautiful item. It is made of pewter and aluminum. It is in great condition.....no dings or dents. Happy bidding.
