Q.Why are Poul Henningsen's Lamps regarded so highly? Poul was the first in the 1920's to apply the physical laws of light reflexion to lamp design & construction. The problem arrised with the invention of lamps in the transition from the open flame being sustituted by the incandescent bulb. Entering a total dark room and turning on the switch made your pupils constrict at the strong direct light.This would be like going from a dark movie theater immediately into a bright sunny afternoon without being able to close your eyes and, on top of that, your pupils will not adjust for you - ouch!! Henningsen tought of a soft light that will illuminate a room and be gentle to your eyes. Q. What happened in those years in Scandinavia?. Lamps undoubtely extended much the working hours in the Scandinavian countries w darkness in winter months begins at 3 PM or much earlier.Denmark was in close contact with the technological developments of central Europe while the other nordic countries (Sweden, Norway & Finland) were isolated much up north. Soon lamps were in great demand and that feed many more people experimenting with ilumination devices and an inmense prism of different models playing with light. In Henningsen's case he was a socialist critic of society confronted with the inmense crisis of the crash of the 30's affecting the lives of millions which finally ended in WW2 with the Hitler holocaust.Poul Henningsen designed beautyful lamps that are very much sought after in the XXI century for their timeless originality and common sense.
