This item is a very rare photograph album that once belonged to an Officer the HQ staff of the 8 th Battalion the Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry or possibly HQ staff 69th Brigade (23rd Division) and it reflects their movements during the Great War on the Somme, Ypres and then Italy. There are named sections of photographs in the album of various scenes from Albert, La Boisselle, Fricourt, Shelter Wood, Contalmaison, Ypres, The Plateau (likely refers to the Asiago Plateau) and the Piave. There is even one photo of a German tank on the Place de la Concorde in Paris. There are a number of photos which show the location of HQ at the time including one which is noted HQ Staff 8th K.O.Y.L.I. and others of Brigade HQ. Named individuals photographed in the album include Pearse, Polegreen (likely Capt. L.J.T. K.O.Y.L.I.), Kind (likely Capt. S.L. Y&L Regt.), Grimwade, Babington and “George Robey” and many others as well as the obligatory couple of photos of HRH the Prince of Wales with Gen Gordon and Lord Hamilton as well as some named Italian Officers / Interpreters. Alhough the original owner of the album (who i assume took the photos) is not named there is a photo of a single officer captioned “On the Montello” that I believe is him. There are many interesting photos of such things as “camouflage on the Amiens-Albert Road”, "The Crater" read more
