"La glace a 2 faces" This unusual book that blends photograph, art, celebrity and poetry. It is the award-winning work of French photographer Michel Cot with French text by Pierre Mac Orland. It is inscribed by Jean Cocteau (facsimile), the famous movie director. It was published by Arthaud in 1957, a kind of Who's Who in French culture. It has tipped-in photographs, meaning they are attached only on one side and have the texture and appearance of real photographs. For each photograph of a French notable in both fine and performing arts, t is a self-portrait and facsimile inscription by that person. Picasso's is shown above. Many of the 40 personages whose artwork and words appear with his/her photograph are internationally famous, including Bernard Buffet, Ives Montand, Leslie Caron, Marc Chagall, Maurice Chevalier, Colette, Jean Paul Sartre, Maurice Utrillo, Francoise Sagan and Cocteau. I also have included the photograph of Marcel Marceau, the only one I've ever seen of him without his trademark white mime makeup. Very handsome. His self-portrait, however, is in character. I do not read French well enough to understand the poetic homage to Cot by Cocteau at the beginning of the book, but it and his self-portrait were good enough facsimiles to fool me into thinking they were original.
