Signed and Inscribed by the author. Very Scarce. A nice copy of this scarce and fascinating book. This book is signed and inscribed by the author on the half title page: "For the Rev. Chester Hodgson. friend and comrade-in-arms in the battle for the Kingdom of God, With best wishes Pierre Van Paassen." Published more than 60 years ago, this book has long been out of print and signed copies sell for more than $50. Snother inscribed First Edition book is not likely to come up for sale again soon on ebay. From the Author's Preface: "Since the war now raging is one of global dimensions, involving the future and destiny of all mankind, it may appear to some that the solution of the problems of so small a country as Palestine, will be but an incidental, if not a task of minor importance for the United Nations at some future peace conference. I have nevertheless made Palestine the central theme of this book. "I have done this because I do not believe that the defeat of the Axis will automatically solve the Jewish problem with which Palestine is intimately and inextricably bound up. For that question it is in fact being settled now; on the one hand by the frightful and uninterrupted killing of Jews in Europe and on the other by the lack of interest in high places, both in Britain and in America, in providing the terrorized remnants of European Jewry with a means of escape or even with a ray of hope for survival. "In the welter of immense and vexing problems facing the United Nations in Europe, Asia, and Africa, especially in the world's traditional areas of colonialism, wherein Palestine is located, the present method of dealing with the Jews by reassuring them from time to time with saccarine but perfectly meaningless phrases and on the other hand by enforcing their exclusion from Palestine may well be, I am afraid, indicative of the manner and spirit in which other peoples' problems are to be dealt with by the secret diplomacy of an unregenerate imperialism. "The fate of the Jews is being settled today by political events in the Near East and by decrees issued by Britain's Colonial Office. The new and better world that is to emerge from mankind's present agency is becoming visible in the Holy Land. It is not a happy or inspiring sight. "As one who is aware and who feels with a sense of personal involvement Christianity's guilt in the Jewish people's woes and and the constant deepening of their anguish, I could no longer be silent. I made no emotional appeal. My language is not violent; the facts are. I simply state the case of the Jews and their country for the consideration of all men of good will." Contents include: There are no more prophets; Prelude to Palestine's liberation; Britain's role in Palestine; Best-kept secret of the war; Imperialism's reward; Solution; etc. According to Wikepedia: " Pierre van Paassen (February 7, 1895 - January 8, 1968) [1 ] was a Dutch–Canadian-American journalist, writer, and Unitarian minister. He was born in Gorinchem , Netherlands , then emigrated with his parents to Canada in 1914. After entering a seminary, he served as a missionary to Ruthenian immigrants in the Alberta hinterland, where he helped with medical work. In 1917 he left theological school to serve with the Canadian army in France in World War I as an infantryman and sapper .In 1921 he became a journalist with the Toronto Globe , and a year later moved to the U.S. and began writing a syndicated column for the Atlanta Journal Constitution . From 1924 to 1931, Van Paassen worked as a foreign correspondent and columnist for the New York Evening World , based in Paris.
