Clock Glass Decal/Transfer for Circa 1820s Antique Pillar & Scroll shelf/mantel clock, New Old StockI recently found a collection of clock transfers and decals used to decorate the clock glasses traditionally found in various types of American 19th-century mantle and shelf clocks. These decorative decals are applied to the back of a clock glass that has lost its original transfer, or in some cases, reverse glass painting.Designs similar to these may have been found in OG clocks, steeple and the beehive clocks double-decker and triple-decker clocks, pillar and scroll clocks, Wood Works, kitchen clocks and other American made mantle clocks.When they are applied to the back of the clock glass, either the clear original glass, or a new glass, the designs, which have been reproduced to replicate the antique original art work, can restore the clock to its former beauty. There is no need to apply the transfer to a piece of cardboard and then insert the cardboard behind the glass. The decal adheres directly to the back of the original or replacement glass.This particular design measures approximately 10" inches wide by 6 7/8" inches tall made to fit many antique Pillar & Scroll clocks like those made by Eli Terry, Seth Thomas, Mark Levenworth and many others.Here are the instructions the artist who made these gave me:Step 1, Spray the front of the decal with any glossy clear coat, like Krylon Crystal Clear, that is available in hardware stores and Home Depots and let the decal thoroughly dry overnight. Any glossy clear brand will do but do not use a lacquer spray.Step 2, The decals are placed in a pan or tray of slightly warm water for a short while and then applied to the inside back of the glass. Before dipping the design in water, cut the decal to size to fit the glass to which it is being applied. Slide the decal/transfer just over the edge of the backing paper, placing it in position on the glass and Gently pull the paper from the back of the transfer. Carefully rub out the bubbles and you're done with Step 2. This is a high end reproduction made on clear decal paper. When first applied to the glass after the backing paper is removed, the colors will look muted and transparent.Step 3, to bring out the colors, wait until the decal dries overnight and then "white wash" the entire back with any flat white or off white latex paint to make the decal look like the photo included in this sale. Use a brush or even a paper towel to apply paint horizontally across the entire back, just like the antique glasses. Dilute the latex paint with a little water to make it thinner. If you leave streaks in the paint it will even look older viewed from the front. Apply the "white wash" unevenly to create an older effect. After you put in a little effort, this transfer will look like the antique original. These transfers are a RARE find for the antique clock restorer.These decals are new old stock (NOS). I really have no idea how old they are but they look to me to be in good condition although some may not be perfect and have a small wrinkle near their edges. They are hand made so multiples of the same design may be slightly varied in color tone.Shipping is inexpensive as they will be placed between two rigid pieces of cardboard and mailed first class.
