Personally Signed by Rear Admiral Edward Gueritz Edward Gueritz, as a Royal Navy lieutenant, was on his 19th day under shelling on a Normandy D-Day beach when a piece of German shrapnel ripped through his helmet and crushed the back of his skull. Joining the Navy In 1939 he was a midshipman on HMS Cumberland when the heavy cruiser played a part at Montevideoin the battle of the River Plate, helping to hem in the German pocket battleship Admiral Graf Spee and causingits captain to scuttle it. The following year he was serving on the destroyer HMS Jersey, as part of a flotilla commanded by Lord batten, when it was involved in a serious skirmishin the Channel.His other experiences during the War included being rescued from the sea at Malta after the destroyer HMS Jersey, on convoy duty, struck a mine and sank with the loss of 35 hands. His duties took him to Scotland and the Indian Ocean, where he acted as beachmaster during the capture of Madagascar. In Scotland he prepared for the invasion of Normandy with detailed rehearsals at Invergordon. When D-Day came he was assigned to Sword Beach, a strip of sand stretching from Ouistreham to read more
