Capacitor Discharge Unit (CDU) For Points Motors A points motor CDU is used to deliver a powerful burst of current to energise the points motor coils so that a crisp points action is experienced as they snap into position. As the current is deliverd in a burst only, the coils do not heat up and their life and reliability is prolonged (no burn out). Wiring is simple, requiring only a connection to an external power supply (usually the unregulated AC output of your speed controller) and some non latching (push to make) switches for each coil. The CDU draws a very low current from the PSU storing energy in the capactiors for when it is needed.
