24cm x 19cm, oils onto a prepared oak board This fine head study dates from somewhere around the late 18th and early 19th century. It’s an intriguing little portrait and is clearly the work of an accomplished artist. There is also evidence of a signature. Inscribed in the bottom right hand corner are what appear to be the letters J and H (or perhaps R?). This may benefit from further investigation.The intricate gilded frame compliments the painting beautifully and has survived in remarkable condition. The painting itself seems to be generally in a very good state (some small loss in the varnish can be perceived when held at an angle in light but apart from that, all appears well).A stunning and highly decorative piece of art.
