RAILEX Z(1:220) SPECIAL EDITION ADLER TRAIN NO 8770A This is the ultimate Special Edition Adler set that comes complete with all of its 6 cars (the maximum that was made for this train) including the extremely rare sound car that has the sound chip that gives y ou a proportional "chuffing" sound...extremely rare for a z scale train set. By proportional I mean depending on the speed of the train, the "chuffing" sound speeds up as the train speeds up and slows down as the train slows down...amazing. The loudness of the chuffing also seems to be proportional to the scale size of the train...not too loud, not too soft, but in scale with the tiny z scale size of the train. This set originally came in several versions starting with an un-motorized version with engine, tender, and only 3 cars (no sound car since that version didn't have any motor so was display only). I've noticed recently the un-motorized 3 car display-only set currently goes for upward of $1200. Another stepped up version came in a wooden collector's box, was motorized but only had 5 cars with an empty cut out in the box for a 6th car that you had to buy separately. Those sets go for considerably more than the 3 car un-motorized display sets. Then there was the ultimate set...this one...that came in the wooden collector's display box, the engine, the tender, and all six cars (no empty cut-out in the box so 8 pieces in all) which includes the very rare sound chip car and was fully motorized. Even for these Ultimate Special Edition sets, the sound chip car is a rarity. Railex (who made these sets for Marklin) found the sound chip car to be "iffy" ... sometimes they worked, sometimes they didn't, sometimes they worked intermittently, so early on, Railex discontinued putting in the sound chips even in these ultimate 6 car special edition sets. So to have a set with a working sound chip car is extremely rare. To my knowledge (folks can correct me if I'm wrong) this was the only z scale train that even attempted proportional sound on the train itself. I know about the controllers that add sound to a train set which are no fun since you can tell the sound comes from the control box and not the train. On this set, the cute chuffing sound comes from the train itself just like in real life chuffing along from the train as the train makes its way around your layout. I tested the sound car by scooting it around an electrified track and the proportional sound seemed to work fine...the chuffing sound speeded up and slowed down proportional to how fast I was scooting the car around the track and it worked both going forward as well as going backward and proportionately so in both directions.
