John William Godward, R.B.A. (attrib.) (British, 1861-1922) “Memories” (Original Watercolour, executed ca.1897: over a hundred years old) Otherwise known as “A Lone Maid” Being a watercolour version of the last picture Godward exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists, London , in 1892. There is a watermark recently identified by the restorer in the paper (right side), “J Whatman 1897”. 48.5cm x 38.5cm (15.5” x 19.5”) [A previous attribution was made to Godward’s colleague, William Anstey Dolland (1858-1929) - in the Lawrence Alma-Tadema tradition - but it has now been correctly identified as a Godward work, thanks to Swanson’s catalogue – see details below] There is no signature; all the edges of the paper had previously been slightly trimmed to fit into the original frame (which was damaged beyond repair). Professionally cleaned and conserved, matted and newly framed in 2009. Colours are now extremely vibrant, restored to their late nineteenth-century look. A MOST APPEALING, AND VERY LARGE WATERCOLOUR, IN THE BEST LATE PRE-RAPHAELITE / ACADEMIC CLASSICAL TRADITION, AND IN SUPERB CONDITION. PROVENANCE: AVENUE FINE ART (HAMPSHIRE, UK) - PURCHASED IN 2009 See Swanson’s Catalogue in John William Godward: The Eclipse of Classicism , pages 184-5, no.11, for the oil version (in Auckland City Art Gallery , read more
