This is a nice First World War Model 1903 Springfield Bayonet in the early 1905 leather scabbard that remains in excellent condition. The bayonet is with finely chiseled dark walnut grips that are without damage. The blade measures 15¾ inches in length and is bright, unblemished, and without rust or pitting. The blade is with the original armory tip. One ricasso is marked with, "SA" over the flaming bomb Ordinance Department mark and with the date, "1906" below. The other ricasso is marked, "US" over the number, "119058". The spring button release functions perfectly.The Type II leather bayonet scabbard is lightly stamped "R.I.A. 1906. The very lightly stamped inspector's initials, 'W.K. for William Kennedy appear below the date. Civilian inspector Kennedy inspected a wide variety of accouterments at the Rock Island Arsenal during the first two decades of the 20th century. All stitching is original, tight, and intact. There is some light scuffing to the leather and no wear at the. The early U.S. Krag style belt hook attachment mechanism swivels properly as designed. This is an unmodified 4th year issue, Type II Pattern M1905 leather scabbard that has not been modified in any way.
