In the Badakshar region of Afghanistan lies the forbidding Kokcha Valley- is the fabled "Blue Mountain". The Best Lapis Lazuli has been mined in this isolated area for over 4,000 years. The Sar-E-Sang deposits lie far up the steep mountain slopes. Narrow footpaths lead to the great veins in the cliff face-now t are some actual shafts dug in. In ancient times the Lapis was collected by building great fires in front of the face of the cliff. After a day or 2, when the rock was extremely hot, water would be thrown on the cliff. This would splinter great hunks of Lapis from the mountain and the pieces would be hauled down with donkeys. The rich history of this gem is well documented from the time of the first Pharohs. In the Middle Ages Lapis Lazuli was ground up and used as a pigment for the paint used in the famous Illustrated Manuscripts the monks of that time crafted. It was used to create the Blue in the sky and water portions of the Manuscripts. This is the source of the color-name Azure. Lapis is a mineral comprised of of Azurite, Pyrite and the Evil Calcite. NOT all Lapis is from the Sar-E-Sang deposits. This Slab contains alot of the Best GEM Blue an absolute minimum of Calcite and a bit of Sparkling Gold Pyrite.
