PRESTON No 1368D 1½ inch Patent Adjustable Shoulder Rabbet Plane Edward Preston and Sons were renown for their metal planes, with their superb craftsmanship and often unique appearance, and are a favorite of users and tool collectors on both sides of the Atlantic. Preston made a wide range of metallic shoulder and rabbet planes and the No 1368D was the biggest of them all . It is about 9 inches long overall , with a 8¼ inch bottom and 1½ inch iron . It weighs a very hefty 4½ pounds . It is easy to handle and capable of the finest work. These planes are quite scarce in any condition and highly prized in the shape this one is in. This example is clean and without any damage. The throat is perfect . The iron is marked E.PRESTON & SONS / BIRM' M ENG. / TUNGSTEN STEEL , and is about half of the original length . The plating on the lever and the top w the plane was held is worn. The sides looked to have been cleaned up, and some of the plating may have been polished away. I can't tell and it looks pretty good as is. A former owner V. ISRAEL stamped his name lightly on the sides. No 1368D stamped on the side and E. PRESTON & SONS / BIRM' M ENG. with the PRESTON DEVICE on the toe. Take a look at the photos and you can get a better idea of how the plane looks, and make up you own mind about condition.
