In this auction we have an American Flyer clockwork locomotive and tender. Ol' number 16 is in good shape for her age but does have some paint chipping/rust. The tender, number 120 is in good shape as well, but some paint chipping has occured over it's life. There doesn't appear to be damage such as dings, dents or any humungous flaws like that. The clockwork mechanism does work great. I've never fully wound it since I was always afraid of breaking it, but it does wind up nicely and and moves like beast. The mechanism on the inside only powers the two front drive wheels of the locomotive, the side rod of the left hand side is missing (please see pics) and the original key is also included. The main locomotive is cast iron but the tender is a light metal, perhaps tin. The wheel on this item are intact and solid. From my research, I beleive that American Flyer did make clockwork locmotives up to the 1930's so I can not date the peice but it does seem to be earlier than the 30's. It's nice to think that this was the toy to have back in the '20s if your home wasn't powered by electricity and you couldn't have electric trains. Please ask any and all questions that you may have and please see my photos as they are part of the description. Thank you for looking and !!
