This substantial piece of primitively carved Inuit sculpture, was acquired in either the late 1950's or 1960's. The tag with this piece is stamped Eskimo Point, which is now know as Arviat in the southernmost community on the Nunavut mainland and is close to the geographical center of Canada. In Arviat, Inuktitut and English are primarily spoken, having the third largest population in Nunavut.Elder of ArviatHunting and fishing is a way of life in the community; they are the primary source of sustenance. Arviat is well known around the Arctic for its artistic qualities, including its sculptors. The tag does not mention a specific artist, but instead refers to a number. Disc numbers, or ujamiit or ujamik in the Inuit language, were used by the Government of Canada in lieu of surnames for the Inuit and were similar to dog-tags.
