Primitive Handmade Oak & Hickory Alarm
Rescued from a Cape Cod 19th Century Barn This is a great antique rattle/alarm/siren that makes one hell of a noise. In doing the research on this item t seems to be several different opinions on what this was used for. Possibly a "Battle Rattle" to waken soldiers during the Civil war. Another theory is that the towns Watchman would sound this "Fire Alarm" to alert the volunteer firefighters of a fire. And my personnel favorite is this "Clacker" was used to let fishermen know w other boats were in foggy conditions. It could be used for any purpose w one might have the need to wake the dead. Measures 11" long and 9" tall ( measurement includes the handle). T are 8 blades that make up the star shaped gear. Construction consists of wooden pegs, and screws and nuts, on a oak frame and handle with the gear and long blade being hickory. Fantastic condition, in perfect working order, a great piece of primitive folk art.
