Montsalvat, by Anri Hand-Carved & Hand-Painted Chess SetRarely found in this condition and complete with the rare original board, here we have a premium example of the highly desirable miniature "Montsalvat" set, by Anri of Italy. Clearly, this particular set has been pampered and rarely played... with all pieces in pristine condition, sharply detailed, and wonderfully colored. The striking craftsmanship of this set is unparalleled - as collectible as fine art as much as it is a delightful set to play (although I can't seem to win whether playing white or black!). Strips of black velvet lay loosely in the casket to protect the pieces from scratches, but may be removed if wanted. The original Anri sticker is taped inside the lid of the solidly constructed casket since it lost its adhesiveness over the years. The Kings are 3.5" tall and the Pawns are about 2.5" tall. The diameter of the felted bases range from just under 1" on the Pawns to about 1.25" on the larger pieces. The board measures 14.5" with 1.75" squares and also has an Anri sticker taped to its reverse. The fine carving of the Knights is spectacularly done, with no evidence of any fractures or repairs (which is rare as the Knights often have missing or reattached limbs).
