The colors in this proof lithograph are stunning. Based on the principle that water doesn't mix with wax or grease, an artist would draw a design on the stone's surface with a wax or grease pencil, then delicately chip away a thin layer of the surrounding stone, leaving the design slightly raised. Water was applied and ink was rolled across the stone, adhering only to the greased areas. After this process was completed, an imprint was made. For every color in the design, a separate stone was required. If desired, bronze dust or gold leaf was sprinkled over carefully applied shellac. The label was then embossed by 40 ton presses. This process was expensive, costing as much as $2000. - $6000. in 19th century dollars for designing and printing the more colorful labels. Stone lithography has become "historical art". Note the color bars in the bottom border representing the color of the stones used in this beautiful advertisment for Runkel Bro.'s Cocoa.
